Buy X Get Y and other promotions

A customer buys two pairs of leggings and gets a free top. A week later they return one pair of leggings. They no longer qualify for the free top, but they still have it. What should the refund be?

You choose how this works under Return Rules → Basics, in the bundles and promotions card, under Buy X Get Y promotions.

The three options

Recalculate the deal. This is the default. If a return breaks the deal, the saving the customer is keeping comes off their refund. In the example above, the value of the free top is taken off the leggings refund. The shopper sees this in the portal before they submit.

Keep the discount. Each item is refunded at what Shopify recorded for it. A free item stays free even when the items that earned it come back. This is the most generous option and the easiest to explain. It also costs you the most.

Return the promotion together. Items bought in a Buy X Get Y deal have to come back as a set. Shoppers can still exchange one item on its own, for example for a different size.

Give Yoyo access to your discounts first

To spot a Buy X Get Y deal on an order, Yoyo needs to read your Shopify discounts. The card shows Allow discount access until you've approved this. Click it and approve the permission on Shopify's screen.

Until you do, Yoyo behaves as Keep the discount, whichever option is selected. The card says so, so you're never unsure which one is live.

Good to know

• This covers Shopify's Buy X Get Y discounts, both automatic ones and discount codes.
• Ordinary percentage or money-off codes don't need any of this. Shopify already spreads those across the items, and Yoyo refunds what was paid.
• If an order has both a bundle and a Buy X Get Y deal, both settings apply.
• An exchange counts as keeping the item, so swapping a size never breaks a deal.
